iOS Android PWA Offline-First All 17 BDR Routes

You're riding the world's best routes
with tools built for city traffic.

Adventure motorcycle riders deserve purpose-built technology. Right now, most are making do with tools that were never designed for the backcountry.

Google Maps sends you off a cliff

Generic GPS apps have no BDR route data, no off-road awareness, and go completely dead the moment you lose cell signal. Which happens constantly on BDRs.

Group coordination is a nightmare of text chains

Managing 6 riders across 40 miles of single-track over a group text thread is how people get left behind. There is no real-time map. No emergency broadcast. No system.

You discover the washed-out crossing by riding into it

Trail hazard information lives in forum posts from three months ago and Facebook groups with 12,000 members and zero organization. There is no live, location-tagged system.

The next gas station is 90 miles away and you didn't know

Finding rider-critical services along a remote BDR corridor is not something any existing app solves well. Google shows what's near a highway, not what's near your route.

Your navigation app drains the battery by noon

A 10-hour BDR day demands a navigation tool built to last as long as you ride. Apps designed for 30-minute commutes destroy batteries on all-day backcountry adventures.

Completing a BDR earns you nothing but memories

The achievement of riding an entire BDR deserves recognition. Right now, it lives in your head and maybe an Instagram post. There is no system that captures and celebrates it.

“Adventure motorcycle riders have the most demanding navigation requirements of any recreational category — remote terrain, no signal, all-day duration, group coordination, safety dependencies. And every tool they use was built for someone else's problem.”

Real riders. Real BDRs. Real feedback.

From our beta riders and early access community members.

"I downloaded the Colorado BDR map the night before, rode 11 hours with zero bars the entire day, and the navigation never missed a beat. This is what every BDR rider has needed for years."

🏍️
Marcus T.
BMW R1250GS · Colorado BDR veteran

"I organize group rides for 8–12 people. Before Don's Directions, managing a group on a BDR was a logistical nightmare. Now I can see every rider on one map and broadcast to all of them with one tap."

📋
Lisa R.
Yamaha Ténéré 700 · Group ride organizer

"I was a total newcomer to BDRs and the difficulty ratings and community mentorship in this app gave me the confidence to attempt my first section. I finished the Oregon BDR because of what I learned here."

🆕
Alex K.
KTM 890 Adventure · First BDR completed

"I posted a washout report at a creek crossing on the Montana BDR. Three other riders messaged me within an hour saying the notification saved them from turning back too late. This is what community safety looks like."

⚠️
Sarah W.
Honda Africa Twin · Montana BDR

"The gas finder alone is worth the download. I was able to plan my fuel stops on the Utah BDR down to the mile. I never once rode anxious about range because I always knew exactly where the next station was."

⛽
Dave H.
KTM 1090 Adventure · Utah BDR

"I unlocked the Colorado BDR completion achievement and posted the card. Six people in my riding club downloaded the app that same day because they wanted to track their own completions. The achievement system is genuinely motivating."

Ride it. Fund it.
Keep it open for the next rider.

Backcountry Discovery Routes exist because committed people work continuously to research, open, and maintain access across millions of acres of public land. That work costs real money — and that money has to come from somewhere.

Don's Directions builds the donation system directly into the app not as a guilt mechanism but as a genuine expression of what the adventure riding community already believes: if you ride it, you fund it.

Donation System

Every donation goes directly to BDR trail maintenance.

Don's Directions does not take a cut. The donation flow routes funds directly to BDR trail preservation projects. You choose the amount. You choose the project. You see the before-and-after photos when the work is done. Your name appears on the project completion post as a contributor.

Target giving to the exact trails you ride
Featured donation projects show you exactly what your money funds — a specific creek crossing repair, a trailhead signage project, a reroute around private land. Give to the route you rode last summer. See the work completed. Know your contribution kept the next rider safe.

100% of donations go to BDR trail maintenance  ·  Tax receipts generated automatically

Why the donation system is a retention feature, not a revenue feature. Don's Directions does not profit from donations. The mechanism exists because a rider who donates to the repair of a creek crossing they rode through last August is a rider who opens the app every time they plan a new ride. Giving creates belonging. Belonging creates community. The donation system is the most powerful long-term engagement mechanic in the product — and the trails stay open.

General
Is Don's Directions really free for riders?
Yes. Free forever. No credit card required. No trial period. No paywalled features. All 17 BDR routes, offline navigation, group coordination, hazard reporting, community feed, local place discovery, rider profiles, achievements, and the donation system are all included at zero cost for adventure motorcycle riders. The app's mission is to serve the BDR community — not to extract revenue from the riders who use it.
Does Don's Directions work offline?
Yes — and this is the most important feature we built. Download your route area map tiles, waypoints, and route data before departure over WiFi. Once downloaded, navigation, turn-by-turn instructions, and GPS tracking all run completely independently of cellular connectivity. You can navigate an entire BDR section with zero signal. When you reconnect, queued hazard reports and messages sync automatically. The app is built for the backcountry — where connectivity is the exception, not the rule.
How many BDR routes are included?
All 17 official Backcountry Discovery Routes are included — every one, at launch. Each route includes precise mileage to 2 decimal places, time estimates in hours/minutes format (e.g. "18h 30m"), difficulty ratings (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert), best-season guidance, route highlights, section-by-section breakdowns for weekend warriors, and integrated trail condition reports from the community. Route data updates automatically when BDR publishes new information.
What platforms does Don's Directions support?
Don's Directions supports iOS, Android, and Progressive Web App (PWA). The PWA can be installed to your home screen on any device for a full native app experience — offline support, push notifications, GPS access, and camera access all included. No app store required for PWA access. Native iOS and Android apps are available through their respective stores for the full native experience including Bluetooth helmet integration and background GPS tracking.
How does Don's Directions make money if it's free for riders?
The rider plan is free and will remain free. The app is sustained through: (1) Optional PRO features for riders who want enhanced capabilities beyond the core free experience. (2) Partnerships with motorcycle gear and equipment brands for relevant, non-intrusive promotions within the rewards and discovery sections. (3) Donation processing — while 100% of donations go to trail maintenance, processing partnerships offset operating costs. The student experience is never monetized through advertising inside the navigation or safety features. Ever.
Navigation & Routes
How do I download routes for offline use?
Open the route you want to ride, tap the download button, and select the coverage area. The app shows the estimated download size before you initiate. We recommend downloading over WiFi at home the night before your ride — never using cellular data at the trailhead. The download includes map tiles, route waypoints, turn-by-turn instruction data, and all associated place information for the corridor. A full BDR route download typically takes 2–5 minutes on a standard home WiFi connection.
Can I create and share my own custom routes?
Yes. The custom route planning tool lets you draw routes with waypoint editing, automatic road snapping, and off-road path options. The app calculates distance, estimated time, and difficulty based on terrain and elevation. Routes can be exported as GPX, KML, or a shareable link that opens directly in the app for any other Don's Directions user. Saved routes live in your profile and sync across devices. Share your favorite day-trip additions to official BDR corridors with the community through the social feed.
Does the voice navigation work through my helmet speakers?
Yes. Voice guidance is optimized specifically for Bluetooth helmet speaker output — the audio levels, speech rate, and clarity are tuned for the noise environment of an adventure motorcycle at speed. The app integrates with Sena, Cardo, and UClear Bluetooth communication systems. Voice commands are available for hands-free operation during navigation. Instruction delivery is timed to give you adequate notice before turns without cluttering the audio experience between maneuvers.
Group Rides & Community
How does real-time group location sharing work?
When an active group has location sharing enabled, every member's live position appears on a shared map — updated at battery-optimized intervals that balance awareness against battery drain. The group organizer can see at a glance whether the group is bunched at a technical section or spread dangerously thin across a ridge. When a rider stops moving, the group leader receives an immediate notification. Location sharing activates only when you explicitly turn it on and deactivates the moment you leave the group. Your precise GPS coordinates are never shared outside the group — other riders see a relative map position, not a coordinate.
What is the LFG (Looking for Group) system?
LFG is a dedicated post category in the community feed. Riders post their planned route, dates, experience level, pace preference, and bike type. Other riders respond or request to join. The LFG system is the primary tool for turning a solo ride into a group adventure and for connecting newcomers with experienced riders willing to guide them. Weekend warriors like Sarah use LFG to find compatible partners for single-day BDR sections without having to organize a full group ride from scratch.
How do trail hazard reports work?
Any rider can submit a hazard report with a GPS-tagged location, category (road damage, closure, weather, wildlife), description, and optional photos. Reports appear as overlay markers on the map for every rider on that route. Riders approaching a confirmed hazard within 10 miles receive a push notification. Community verification — multiple riders confirming the same hazard — elevates the report's visibility. Hazards expire automatically based on type (a weather event expires faster than a road closure). The system works offline too — reports queue locally and submit when connectivity returns.
Privacy & Data
Is my location data safe? Who can see it?
Your location is never shared without your explicit action. Location sharing for groups activates only when you turn it on and is visible only to members of your current active group — never to the general public. Hazard report location is tagged to the report, not to your profile. Precise GPS coordinates are never stored persistently or sold to third parties. Location history is retained only for the ride duration unless you explicitly save it to your activity log. GDPR and CCPA compliant. Full data export and deletion available on demand.
Does Don's Directions sell rider data?
No. Never. Rider data is not sold, rented, or traded to third parties. Your riding history, location data, route completions, and profile information are used exclusively to operate the app and personalize your experience. We use standard service providers (hosting, analytics, email) under strict data processing agreements. No third-party advertising networks operate inside the navigation or safety features. You can export all your data at any time and request full account deletion — processed within 30 days.
