The story behind Proscris Workbench

I didn't build this for the market.
I built it because I was drowning.

Hi — I'm a solo developer who builds and manages digital systems for multiple businesses at once. Most days that meant living inside twenty-plus browser tabs: Gmail in one, Google Ads in another, Analytics next to it, a CRM three tabs over, five different AI chat windows open at the same time, and a dozen client social accounts scattered in between. Every task meant hunting for the right tab, remembering which login belonged to which client, and losing my train of thought a dozen times before lunch.

So I built Proscris Workbench for myself, first. Not as a product — as a way to stop losing my own focus twenty times a day.

This extension exists to protect your flow state. Not to look impressive in a screenshot.

What started as a personal sidebar to stop the tab-hunting grew into the AI co-pilot, the screenshot and recording studio, the SEO auditor, and the file organiser you can see further down this page — each one built the same way: because I genuinely needed it, and building it myself was faster than paying for four separate subscriptions and still switching between all of them every day.

Click the toolbar icon and a seven-tab inspector opens beside your quick actions. It reads the live DOM of whatever page you are on — so it works on staging sites, password-protected pages and localhost, where crawler-based tools simply cannot go.

Overview

Title and meta description with live character counts and truncation warnings, canonical URL with self-reference check, meta robots, viewport, language, charset, doctype, word count and real load timings.

Headings

The complete H1–H6 outline in source order as an indented tree, with per-level counts, hidden and empty heading flags, and automatic detection of skipped levels that break your document hierarchy.

Status

The live HTTP status of the page itself plus an on-demand crawl of every link on it, reporting 200s, 301 redirects, 404s and 500s with the final destination after redirects.

Links

Internal and external links in separate collapsible groups, deduplicated, with anchor text, nofollow flags, missing-anchor-text warnings and a security check for target="_blank" without rel="noopener".

Images

Every image with its thumbnail, filename and alt text, separating truly missing alt attributes from intentionally empty decorative ones — plus oversized-for-display warnings, and download and copy buttons on each.

Schema

Every JSON-LD block rendered as an expandable, drill-down tree so you can trace nested @graph structures — with malformed blocks flagged, plus microdata and RDFa detection.

Social preview tab

See exactly how your page will look when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and X before you publish — rendered as pixel-accurate preview cards using your real Open Graph and Twitter Card tags. Missing tags are flagged, and the preview models the fallback behaviour each platform actually uses when a tag is absent, so you see the real result rather than an idealised one.

Third-party AI providers have their own terms. When you send a message using your OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, xAI or OpenRouter key, that traffic goes directly to them and is governed entirely by their privacy policy — not ours. Installation

Installed and running
in under two minutes

Two ways in. Once the Chrome Web Store listing is live it is a single click; until then, loading the unpacked folder takes about ninety seconds and works identically.

  1. Download and unzip the extension

    After checkout you receive an immediate download link. Unzip it somewhere permanent — your Documents folder, not Downloads — because the browser reads the extension from this folder every time it starts. Moving or deleting it later will disable the extension.

  2. Open the Extensions manager

    Click the puzzle-piece icon in your browser toolbar, then choose Manage Extensions at the bottom of the dropdown.

    Prefer the keyboard? Paste chrome://extensions into the address bar (or edge://extensions in Edge, brave://extensions in Brave) and press Enter.

  3. Turn on Developer mode

    In the top-right corner of the Extensions page, switch on the Developer mode toggle. Three new buttons appear along the top of the page. This is a standard browser setting and is entirely reversible.

  4. Click “Load unpacked” and select the folder

    Click Load unpacked, navigate to the folder you unzipped in step one, and select it. Choose the folder itself — the one containing manifest.json — not the ZIP and not a folder above it. Proscris Workbench installs immediately.

  5. Pin it and you are done

    Click the puzzle-piece icon once more and pin Proscris Workbench to your toolbar. The sidebar appears on your next page load, and the welcome screen walks you through adding API keys and connecting your folders.

Keep the folder where you put it. Unlike a store install, an unpacked extension is loaded from its original folder every time your browser launches. If you move, rename or delete that folder the extension will stop loading. Once the Chrome Web Store listing is live you can switch over and this no longer applies — your settings carry across.

Proscris Workbench is a Manifest V3 extension and needs a Chromium-based browser at version 116 or later. Firefox runs the Gecko engine and does not implement the side-panel, offscreen-document or tab-capture APIs the extension depends on, so it is genuinely incompatible today rather than simply untested — a Firefox port would require rebuilding those subsystems. Safari is on the longer-term roadmap.

Which browsers does Proscris Workbench support?

Any Chromium-based browser at version 116 or later: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Arc. It is not currently compatible with Firefox, which uses the Gecko engine and does not implement the side-panel, offscreen-document and tab-capture APIs the extension is built on. Safari is on the longer-term roadmap.

Does Proscris Workbench send my data to your servers?

No. Your settings, chat history, screenshots, recordings and files are stored locally on your own device. When you use AI chat, messages travel directly from your browser to the AI provider you configured, using your own API key — we never see or proxy that traffic.

The only data that ever reaches us is your name and email if you deliberately choose to sign in, and the contents of any support request you submit.

Do I need to pay for AI usage separately?

Yes, and deliberately so. Proscris Workbench uses your own API keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, xAI or OpenRouter, so you pay those providers directly at their published rates with no markup from us and no artificial usage cap.

Every non-AI feature — screenshots, recording, dictation, the SEO inspector, the file explorer, the sidebar and the command palette — works with no API key at all.

Is this a subscription?

No. Ninety-nine US dollars, paid once, for a lifetime licence including every version 6.x update. There is no recurring charge and no seat count.

Where are my screenshots and recordings saved?

Everything saves automatically into a PROSCRIS folder inside your Downloads directory, organised into Media/Screenshots, Media/Videos, Recordings/Screen, Recordings/Camera, Recordings/Voice, Chats, Agents, Prompts and Tools.

You can optionally connect a different folder on your device — an external drive or a synced folder, for example — and Proscris will mirror every file there as well.

Can I use it without signing in?

Yes. Signing in is entirely optional and only personalises your sidebar with your name, photo and business domain for placeholder URLs. Every single feature works fully without an account.

Does the SEO inspector work on any website?

It works on any normal http or https page — including staging environments, password-protected pages and localhost, which is precisely where crawler-based SEO tools cannot reach.

Browsers block all extensions from reading internal pages such as chrome://settings, the Chrome Web Store and other extensions' pages, so those cannot be audited by any tool.

Will the AI file organiser move my files without asking?

Never. The AI only ever produces a plan. You see every proposed rename next to the original filename, you can edit any name inline, and you can untick anything you disagree with. Files move only when you press Apply.

Every applied batch is written to an undo journal, so a whole reorganisation can be reversed with one click.

Will my extension UI show up in my screenshots?

No. The moment before any capture fires — visible area, full page or selection — every piece of Proscris interface is cloaked and any on-screen notification is dismissed, then the browser is given a full paint frame to commit that state before the shutter. The same cloak applies when you print or save a page as PDF.

What happens when the Chrome Web Store version launches?

You will receive an email with the store link. Installing from the store and removing the unpacked copy takes about thirty seconds, and your settings, agents, prompts and saved files all carry across because they live in your browser storage and your Downloads folder rather than inside the extension folder itself.

Can I get a refund?

If Proscris Workbench does not work for you, email support@proscris.com within fourteen days of purchase and we will sort it out. We would rather refund you than have you own software you do not use.
