What will make more sense

  • Capture a repeatable working method as readable guidance, without assuming every file is loaded automatically.
  • A task-specific method gives the assistant decisions it can actually apply.
  • A readable file can provide context, but automatic discovery has product-specific rules.

One idea to keep

Capture a repeatable working method as readable guidance, without assuming every file is loaded automatically.

The short lesson

Read the explanation at your pace

You probably already have skills you use without writing them down. You know how a customer should be greeted, which details matter in a booking and what a finished piece of work should look like. An agent cannot reliably infer all those preferences from a vague request. A readable instruction file can make the important parts of your method easier to reuse.

Our fictional business is Morningtide Flowers. Its owner prepares thoughtful replies to event enquiries. The replies should sound warm, confirm the known date and ask for a missing delivery detail. That is a useful skill to describe because it combines a repeatable method with a recognizable style. It does not require the owner to program a new application.

The prepared method-before.md shows an informal explanation of that habit. Later lessons turn it into project guidance and a small reusable skill. Start by noticing the decisions the owner already makes. Which source supplies the event facts? What should be checked? What tone fits the business? Which result is useful to the person reviewing the reply?

An instruction file is not a guarantee that every assistant will load or obey it automatically. Applications support different file names, locations and discovery rules. A file explicitly attached or read in a conversation can provide context, while an automatically discovered instruction file follows the selected agent's own conventions. We will keep those two ideas separate throughout the course.

You also do not need to capture your whole personality in one document. Begin with the few preferences that affect this task. “Use the confirmed event date and ask about missing delivery information” changes the work more usefully than a long autobiography. A concise method can still carry character through specific choices, examples and standards for the finished result.

The browser activity asks which habit is concrete enough to preserve. Choose the one that names the task, source and useful output. Optional practice only opens a prepared example. You are learning how to turn experience into guidance an assistant can use, while still checking what the selected application actually read and whether its result reflects the method you intended.

A prompt you can keep

These are example words to copy into your own AI chat when you want to try them. Copying does not send a request.

Read the prepared example for this lesson. Explain the proposed action, its target and the expected result. Keep this as an explanation; do not change files or connect accounts.

A tiny next step, if you want one

Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace

You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.

  1. Optional: open method-before.md.
  2. Optional: identify one small decision in the prepared method that changes the quality of a reply.

If something looks different

My assistant or VS Code uses a different label.

Use the official help for your selected assistant and version. The course teaches the decision; the exact menu or capability can differ.

I do not have the account or feature used in the example.

Use the prepared browser example and downloaded notes. No account connection or paid service is required to complete this course.
