When a Tool Cannot Finish
Treat unavailable tools, denied actions and uncertain results as different situations with clear next steps.

What will make more sense
- Treat unavailable tools, denied actions and uncertain results as different situations with clear next steps.
- The current connection cannot perform the update; a draft plan can still be useful.
- A status check can distinguish an unknown outcome from a confirmed failure.
One idea to keep
Treat unavailable tools, denied actions and uncertain results as different situations with clear next steps.
The short lesson
Read the explanation at your pace
Sometimes an agent cannot finish a task because the required tool is unavailable, a service is offline or the account lacks the necessary access. That is useful information, even when it is inconvenient. The next step is to understand the obstacle and choose a proportionate response. Repeating the same failed action without learning anything rarely makes the situation clearer.
Our prepared problem-card.md shows a fictional calendar connection that can read appointments but cannot change them. The owner asks the assistant to move a booking. The tool reports that the update is not permitted. This does not mean the assistant should find a different route into the account. It means the available workflow cannot perform that update with its current access.
A good explanation identifies the task that was attempted, the returned problem and what remains unchanged. It might say, “I could read the appointment, but this connection cannot reschedule it.” The assistant can still prepare a suggested message or a checklist for someone with the appropriate role. That produces useful work without pretending the calendar update happened.
Different problems call for different responses. A temporary connection interruption might justify a later retry after checking the current state. A missing capability may require a supported integration. An access denial may require the account owner to decide whether another permission is appropriate. The course does not ask you to change permissions or troubleshoot network settings. It teaches you to recognize which question should be answered next.
Be careful with uncertain outcomes. If the service stopped responding after an action was submitted, the result may be unknown rather than definitely failed. Checking the current record before repeating the action can prevent duplicates. Our browser example uses a simple read-only status check to illustrate that idea; it does not contact a calendar or create any appointments.
Choose the response that reports the limitation accurately and offers a useful next step within the task. You do not need to solve every technical obstacle yourself. Ask the assistant to explain what it knows, what it cannot verify and what kind of help would resolve the missing piece. Clear reporting lets you remain in control of the business decision while the technical work is handled by the appropriate person or tool.

Choose the next small step
Follow the prepared example, then select a response to see why it fits. Nothing is connected or changed.
This is a local learning example with prepared responses. It does not run VS Code or contact an AI service.
The calendar connector says updates are not permitted. What fits?
A prompt you can keep
These are example words to copy into your own AI chat when you want to try them. Copying does not send a request.
Read the prepared example for this lesson. Explain the proposed action, its target and the expected result. Keep this as an explanation; do not change files or connect accounts.A tiny next step, if you want one
Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace
You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.
- Optional: read problem-card.md and identify the known limitation.
- Optional: ask your assistant to explain the fictional problem without attempting to connect a calendar.

Choose an answer to see why it fits. You can try again or explore every explanation.
The calendar connector says updates are not permitted. What fits?
A request timed out after submission. What should happen before repeating it?
If something looks different
My assistant or VS Code uses a different label.
Use the official help for your selected assistant and version. The course teaches the decision; the exact menu or capability can differ.
I do not have the account or feature used in the example.
