What will make more sense

  • Use older wording as a reference without replacing current work.
  • Recognize that project history and file events can differ.

One idea to keep

Ask to see an older version before deciding whether any recovery is needed.

The short lesson

Read the explanation at your pace

Looking at an earlier version can answer a question without changing the current file. Perhaps a colleague asks what the booking instruction said before Wednesday. You can inspect the earlier wording, compare it with the current description and explain the difference. You do not need to replace today’s work just to learn what happened yesterday.

VS Code offers history views for configured projects. The Source Control Graph shows project commits. A file’s Timeline can show events such as Git commits and local saves. These are different views of related activity. The exact entries depend on the folder, the providers and what was actually recorded. An empty list does not prove that the business never changed the file elsewhere.

In the prepared history-example.md, the first entry uses the sentence To book, call us during opening hours. The second uses To request a booking, call us during opening hours. You can answer the colleague by citing the second entry and explaining that it clarified the request. No current file needs to be overwritten to provide that answer.

Ask your assistant a read-only question first: show the earlier wording of the booking sentence and explain the change; keep current files untouched. This is a useful boundary because history tools can offer both inspection and recovery actions. Words such as restore, reset or discard concern changes to state. They are not synonyms for show me an older sentence.

You may see a short identifier beside a checkpoint. It is a reference that helps distinguish records, even when two notes sound similar. You do not need to memorize it. If the assistant refers to a particular record, ask it to show the note and relevant file content so you can confirm that it has found the right moment in the project story.

The browser activity asks for a response to a history question. Choose inspection rather than replacement. That one distinction prevents an ordinary request for information from turning into an unintended edit. If real history is not configured in your practice folder, reading the prepared history file gives you the same decision to practice without any setup or risk to existing work.

Answer a history question

Explore the prepared example, then choose a response. Your choice reveals its explanation immediately.

This is a local learning example with prepared responses. It does not run VS Code or contact an AI service.

STEP 1Find the relevant record
STEP 2Read the earlier sentence
STEP 3Explain the difference

A teammate asks what the sentence said before Wednesday. What should you request?

A tiny next step, if you want one

Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace

You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.

  1. Optional: open history-example.md and find the first booking sentence.
  2. Optional: if a practice repository already exists, inspect a file Timeline without using restore actions.

A quick confidence check

These checkmarks are a personal reminder. Choose what feels familiar, and come back whenever you want.

Try a short question

Choose an answer to see why it fits. You can try again or explore every explanation.

Does looking at an older record require restoring it?

What may a file Timeline include?

If something looks different

There is no history entry for the date you expected.

Check what was actually recorded and where. A saved file, a local checkpoint and a remote copy may have different histories.
