Read the short lesson

What will make more sense

  • Identify the approved source for a specific fact.
  • Recognize an unresolved contradiction instead of guessing.

One idea to keep

A current source has a clear purpose and approval status.

The short lesson

Read the explanation at your pace

Two files can describe the same event and disagree. That does not mean the assistant should average their details or choose the one that sounds better. It means the project needs a clear rule for which source controls the current task. A source of truth is the approved place you rely on for a particular type of information, not a promise that the file can never be wrong.

In our prepared example, project-overview.md identifies current-facts.md as the approved source for the welcome session. It says eight places and a 4:00 p.m. start. archive/old-facts.md says ten places and a 3:00 p.m. start, and is clearly marked superseded. The assistant should use the current sheet for the invitation. The old sheet is useful only when the task specifically asks about the earlier plan.

A filename alone is a weak approval system. Something called newest-final.md can still contain an abandoned idea. Add a plain statement inside the source: its purpose, approval status and what it replaces. A date can help, but a later date does not automatically mean the business approved the content. Look for an explicit decision when the stakes matter.

Ask the assistant to identify the controlling source before it drafts. It might reply that it will use current-facts.md for the time and capacity, while treating the archive as historical. That short explanation gives you a chance to correct a misunderstanding before the mistake spreads into a message, website and flyer. One clear source can support several outputs consistently.

If two apparently approved sources disagree and the overview does not resolve them, the assistant should flag the conflict. It should not invent a compromise such as nine places or 3:30 p.m. You can provide the missing business decision, or ask it to leave the uncertain detail out of a draft until the owner confirms it. Uncertainty is useful information when it is made visible.

In the browser activity, select the source for the current invitation. Notice that you are choosing based on purpose and approval status, rather than guessing from the most attractive wording. This is an owner-level skill. The assistant may handle the writing, but your business remains responsible for telling it which facts actually govern the work.

Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace

You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.

  1. Optional: read the approval labels in current-facts.md and archive/old-facts.md.
  2. Optional: point to the overview sentence that identifies the controlling source.

Try a short question

Choose an answer to see why it fits. You can try again or explore every explanation.

Does a newer file date automatically establish approval?

What should an assistant do with two unresolved approved sources?

If something looks different

The business has two files both labeled current.

Ask the owner to identify the controlling source for the disputed facts. Keep that choice visible in the project overview.
