Turn a Feature Off Without Losing the Project
Choose between temporarily disabling an extension and removing it, without confusing either with deleting project files.

What will make more sense
- Choose between temporarily disabling an extension and removing it, without confusing either with deleting project files.
- Disabling changes the feature state without deleting the project.
- External account and billing changes need the provider’s documented process.
One idea to keep
Choose between temporarily disabling an extension and removing it, without confusing either with deleting project files.
The short lesson
Read the explanation at your pace
Trying an extension does not mean keeping it forever. You may decide its feature is unnecessary or prefer a different approach. VS Code provides ways to disable an extension temporarily or uninstall it. Understanding those choices helps you make an ordinary adjustment without treating your project files as disposable.
Our fictional preview helper adds a panel that Harbor Workshop no longer needs for its internal notes. The owner wants to see whether the editor feels clearer without it. Disabling the extension is a useful comparison because the software remains installed while the feature stops being active in the chosen scope. The prepared change-card.md describes this trial without asking you to alter a real setup.
Extensions can often be disabled globally or for the current workspace. Read the menu label carefully. A workspace-only choice can preserve the feature elsewhere when that is what you intend. The editor may request a restart of extensions or another refresh step. Follow the actual interface rather than assuming every version uses the same button wording.
Uninstalling removes the extension from that editor environment. It is different from deleting your business documents, but you should still understand extension-specific effects. Some tools create configuration, cached information or generated files that have their own cleanup behavior. Check the publisher's guidance if the extension manages important data. Do not delete unknown project folders simply because their names look related to an extension.
Removing an editor extension also does not necessarily cancel an external paid subscription or revoke a service connection. Those account actions belong to the provider's own management process. Keep the distinction clear: software installation, local feature state and provider account access are separate things. An assistant can help locate the documented account process when you actually want to change it.
The activity asks for the smallest way to compare the editor without one feature. Choose a temporary disable in the intended scope, rather than removing project files. Optional practice is limited to reading the existing management menu. You do not need to turn off a tool you rely on. The lesson gives you the vocabulary to make a deliberate adjustment when a real need arises.

A prompt you can keep
These are example words to copy into your own AI chat when you want to try them. Copying does not send a request.
Read the prepared example for this lesson. Explain the proposed action, its target and the expected result. Keep this as an explanation; do not change files or connect accounts.A tiny next step, if you want one
Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace
You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.
- Optional: read change-card.md.
- Optional: inspect the Manage menu of an existing extension and locate Disable and Uninstall without selecting them.
