What will make more sense

  • Notice extension versions and use current documentation when a feature changes.
  • A targeted documentation check addresses the changed editor behavior.
  • Specific software and behavior details make the problem easier to investigate.

One idea to keep

Notice extension versions and use current documentation when a feature changes.

The short lesson

Read the explanation at your pace

An extension is software that can change over time. Updates may improve a feature, fix a problem or alter the interface. That is normal, but a business owner still needs to notice whether the workflow continues to produce the intended result. Knowing where update information lives helps you respond to a change without assuming you did something wrong.

Our prepared update-note.md describes a fictional guide-preview extension whose update moves its preview button. The customer document is unchanged, yet the owner's familiar route looks different. The useful response is to read the update information and documentation, then check the same small task again. Rewriting the guide would not address a relocated editor control.

VS Code can update extensions automatically, and the management interface provides update controls. Current behavior can depend on editor settings and organization policy. You do not need to change those settings for this course. Simply recognize that “I did not install anything today” does not guarantee an extension's version stayed unchanged if automatic updating is enabled.

When an important workflow changes, record the extension name, version and observed symptom. “The preview button moved after this update” gives useful context for support. “Everything is broken” is harder to investigate. The prepared inventory.md has a short place for these facts so an assistant or colleague can help without needing access to all your business documents.

Do not treat avoiding all updates as a complete maintenance plan. Equally, a business-critical environment may have its own approved rollout process. Follow that process when one exists. For a personal practice workspace, the main learning habit is to understand a relevant update and repeat a small, recognizable check. The course does not prescribe a universal update schedule for every organization.

The browser choice asks how to respond when a previously familiar feature changes location. Choose the current documentation and a targeted check. Optional practice is reading an installed extension's version or release notes. No update is required. Your goal is to understand software change as something you can identify and discuss in clear terms, rather than as a mysterious problem with the document itself.

Choose the next small step

Follow the prepared example, then select a response to see why it fits. Nothing is connected or changed.

This is a local learning example with prepared responses. It does not run VS Code or contact an AI service.

STEP 2Record the extension and version
STEP 3Check current guidance and the intended task

A prompt you can keep

These are example words to copy into your own AI chat when you want to try them. Copying does not send a request.

Read the prepared example for this lesson. Explain the proposed action, its target and the expected result. Keep this as an explanation; do not change files or connect accounts.

A tiny next step, if you want one

Optional: try 2 small actions at your own pace

You can finish this lesson by exploring the example above. These real-app actions are optional, and there is nothing to submit.

  1. Optional: open update-note.md.
  2. Optional: find the version or release notes for an already installed extension.

A quick confidence check

Try a short question

Choose an answer to see why it fits. You can try again or explore every explanation.

If something looks different

My assistant or VS Code uses a different label.

Use the official help for your selected assistant and version. The course teaches the decision; the exact menu or capability can differ.

I do not have the account or feature used in the example.

Use the prepared browser example and downloaded notes. No account connection or paid service is required to complete this course.
